#GMOs S&D MEPs refuse genetically modified soybean which could encourage the use of potentially harmful herbicides

S&D MEPs today (3 February) have rejected a proposal to authorize the placing on the market of genetically modified soybean that are resistant to herbicides, which could affect human health.

S&D Group spokesperson on environment and health Matthias Groote MEP said: "The Parliament rejected the Commission's new proposal on genetically modified food and feed last October, and also called for a new proposal.

"We cannot support the Commission's current proposal to authorize three new genetically modified soybeans that are resistant to certain herbicides such as glyphosate. They could encourage the use of a herbicide that might cause cancer and have serious effects on human health.

"Furthermore, the S&Ds want clarification on how the approval of feed and food is going to be dealt with in the future. We need strict and clear rules in this regard. The Commission must come up with a new proposal for GMOs in food and feed that also assesses the environmental impact of GMOs.

"According to a Eurobarometer survey on food technology, 58% of Europeans think that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are not safe for future generations. These concerns were taken into account today. Our main priority in this matter is the health and safety of European citizens. Under no circumstances should these three GMOs that are resistant to herbicides be authorized – as these could have negative effects on the environment and health."

S&D MEP and European Parliament negotiator Guillaume Balas added: "This is not the first time that a majority of MEPs have objected to approving GMOs. The Commission should take into account this signal from a democratic majority. It should also be noted that the American authorities have already recognized the danger of glyphosate for human health."
