#Health: Personalised medicine-backers honoured in MEP awards

EAPMBrussels-based multi-stakeholder organization the European Alliance for Personalised Medicine (EAPM) was delighted to note that four MEPs with who it has worked closely in recent years were recognised at a recent awards ceremony, writes EAPM Executive Director Denis Horgan.

Four MEPs with a strong impact on personalised medicine were recognized in this year’s Parliament Magazine awards.

These are:
  • Miriam Dalli, who will speak at the EAPM Conference in a session entitled 'The promotion of cross-disciplinary interaction - getting personal’.
  • Cristian Busoi won an award for his work on health care and will also be at EAPM’s conference. He will speak at the conference dinner in the European Parliament.
  • Jan Philip Albrecht, who was the lead rapporteur for the European Parliament on the revision of the data protection regulation, won an outstanding achievement award.
  • Emma McClarkin, who won an award for work to promote sports and physical fitness.

Other MEPs who will speak at the conference include Peter Liese, Lambert Van Nistelrooij, Andrey Kovatchev, Marju Lauristin, Philippe De Backer, and Elisabeta Gardini.

EAPM has always had a strong relationship with the European Parliament, bringing the concerns of its multi-stakeholder membership to lawmakers at European level, as well as nationally across the 28 Member States.
Indeed, the Alliance’s hosts a STEPs MEPs Interest Group, made up of 20 cross-party members.
STEPs stands for Specialized Treatment for Europe’s Patients, an EAPM campaign running successfully for the last year and among  the Interest Group’s MEPs are Nessa Childers, Phillipe De Backer, Kay Swinburne, Sirpa Pietikainen" and, of course, Cristian Busoi.
As mentioned, Busoi will speak at the Alliance’s 4th Presidency Conference on 5-6 April and is supporting EAPM’s national outreach programme in order to set up a Romanian Alliance for personalised medicine.
Busoi, himself Romanian, said: “There is a distinct need for much more coordination when it comes to research policy in the EU.
“At the moment there is far too much fragmentation and duplication, wasting valuable time and resources, and slowing down innovation.”
He added: “Targeted investment in medical research needs to be stepped up, and Big Data issues solved, if we are to unlock the potential of personalised medicine for the benefit of all 500 million citizens across 28 member states.”
Jan Albrecht, meanwhile, said of the General Data Protection Regulation: “The legislation will create an EU-wide data protection regime for the first time, replacing the outdated patchwork of national data protection rules.
“This will be a major step forward and ensure Europe has data protection rules that are fit for purpose in the digital age.  The gives legal certainty by creating one common data protection standard across Europe, implies less bureaucracy and creates a level playing field for all business on the European market."
Also speaking in the run up to the conference, Miriam Dalli, from Malta, emphasized the need for healthcare to escape from its traditional silos and create links between new technologies.
Limited space is still available for the EAPM Conference at Bibliotheque Solvay, as well as for a pre-conference on genomics in association with Illumina. This takes place on 4-5 April at the same venue.
