MOFA thankful for unprecedented global backing of Taiwan’s WHA bid

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) thanked like-minded partners from around the world on 14 November for their unprecedented support for Taiwan’s participation as an observer at the World Health Assembly (WHA). Taiwan’s bid for participation gained the support of more than 1,700 lawmakers from 80 legislatures, as well as international organizations such as the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China and World Medical Association.

The campaign also received support from high-profile world leaders such as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo; Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison; New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern; former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe; and foreign ministers and deputy ministers of Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and the UK.

The issue of Taiwan’s participation was raised in both the initial WHA meeting in May, by 14 of Taiwan’s allies, and in the recent resumed WHA session, in which representatives from Japan, the US and other countries also added their backing.

In response to the unprecedented level of support, MOFA said that it bodes well for Taiwan’s campaign to take part in the next WHA and that looking forward, the WHO should adopt a neutral stance, avoid political interference and enable Taiwan’s full participation in its activities, mechanisms and meetings so as to achieve Heath For All.
