Treatment Action Group has once again called upon the diagnostics company Danaher to lower the price of its GeneXpert tests for tuberculosis (TB) and other diseases to $5 each, in accordance with publicly available information on the costs of manufacturing. Now, we’re asking our supporters and allies to sign this petition demanding Danaher take this simple, lifesaving action to get more people diagnosed with TB and connected to care. Sign on now!TB kills over 1.5 million people each year, but TB services around the world remain perilously underfunded. The high cost of diagnostics gobbles up limited resources that could otherwise be used for treatment and support, making it harder to get as many people as possible tested and cured. For years, TAG has teamed up with the MSF Access Campaign, Partners in Health (PIH) and other allies on the Time for 5 Campaign to advocate for $5 tests across diseases, which would still cover production costs as well as a modest profit. Last year, Danaher announced that its subsidiary Cepheid would lower the price of its MTB/RIF Ultra TB test to $7.97, but it continues to charge $15 per cartridge for extensively drug-resistant (XDR) TB tests, as well as other test assays for HIV, HCV, and more. The company has also failed to fulfill its commitment to transparency regarding manufacturing costs and revenue, without which its claims are not credible.
To get people the treatment and care that they need, we need rapid and accurate diagnostics to reach everyone, everywhere. We won’t stop holding Danaher and Cepheid accountable until all TB-affected communities have access to GeneXpert diagnostic tests. We hope you’ll join us in sending a message, loud and clear: DANAHER, IT’S TIME FOR 5!
