MEPs vote to end mobile phone roaming charges

tech_roaming47__01__630x420Holidaymakers will no longer face rip-off charges for using their mobile phones abroad following a vote on 3 April in the European Parliament.

The overwhelming backing by MEPs for a single market for electronic communications means that, from 2016, roaming costs will be abolished across the EU, bringing huge savings to consumers and businesses.

Peter Skinner MEP, Labour's European spokesperson on industry, said: "I'm glad that today we've finally set a date for an end to roaming. This is good news for British holidaymakers as well as those who travel for business.

"I challenge anyone to deny the benefits of staying in the EU single market when we can see such real benefits for the consumer."

UKIP were the only British party not to back the end of roaming. Overall, 600 MEPs voted in favour, 13 against, with two abstentions.
