Diners in Brussels may be familiar with Schievelavabo, the name of a popular pub-restaurant. Those in Brabant Walloon will be less familiar although that is set to change with the recent opening of the latest “branch” in the centre of Wavre.

Its reputation for honest, value-for-money food is clearly already spreading fast with the place enjoying a vibrant trade  since it opened six months ago.

That is little wonder, given the fact that you are guaranteed a nice, wholesome meal in very convivial surroundings.

The place successfully combines the informality and lively ambience of a pub/bar with the more relaxed atmosphere of a restaurant.

The menu includes some Belgian classics like croquettes, cassolette de scampi and carpaccio (starters) together with Americain and vol au vent (mains).

The card is not vast but that doesn’t matter a jot because it is a nice, simple choice and the portions also happen to be quite huge.

There’s a kids menu and an excellent range of drinks, including traditional Belgian beers.

It’s makes for a very pleasant evening, be it a couples, families or groups.

The owner has several places of the same name in the Brussels area – the first opening some 25 years ago – and this is the seventh in the “chain.”

Much of the interior and décor has (for now, at least) been retained, a deliberate policy so as not to alienate the many loyal customers who frequented the place before it became  “Schievelavabo” earlier this year.

The front is a bar where you can enjoy a relaxing drink (until late) while the back part is given over to an eating area (including a separate room for private occasions such as birthday parties). Like the young staff, the décor is warm and welcoming.

It is set in a great spot - right in the centre of this bustling Brabant Walloon town – and, with the enormous portions (something you don’t always find in Belgium), you’re certainly guaranteed a very filling meal.

The name may not necessarily be easy to pronounce but few people leave here feeling disappointed, be it whether they’ve had a drink, snack or full-blown meal.

One of the reasons the “chain” has been so successful in Brussels is the unbeatable quality/price the owners aim for at each of their establishments. The same, clearly, applies to their latest venture in Wavre.

The food is relatively simple but nonetheless very enjoyable for all that.

The experience of eating here has been described as akin to joining a friendly Belgian family in their own home and that accurately sums it up. All in all, this looks like shaping up to be a fine addition to the “Schievelavabo family”.
