Migration policy: Mare Nostrum – must continue!
Ska Keller, migration policy spokesperson of the Greens in the European Parliament, has commented on the Italian government's plan to stop the 'Mare Nostrum' operation which has rescued many refugees in the Mediterranean: "The Italian government is playing games with people's lives with its threat to end the Mare Nostrum rescue operation in the Mediterranean. While the operation is unable to provide a wider European solution for refugees, it has certainly succeeded in saving the lives of a great number of people. That's why this operation needs to continue.
"The Italian interior minister's call for more European responsibility goes in the right direction. To support and help refugees is a task for the European Union and each of its member states.
"However, I completely oppose Alafano's proposal to outsource the European asylum system to third party states. Asylum procedures need to be implemented on the territory of the EU. It is the only way to ensure that refugees' legal rights are upheld. Refugees must have legal options open to them to enter the European Union. It is shocking to see people fleeing from war and persecution, for instance from Syria, then having to risk their lives again at the border of the European Union."
