EU Presidency
Poland assumes EU presidency
On January 1, 2025, Poland assumes the presidency of the Council of the European Union. This presidency will be groundbreaking in many ways. It begins during a challenging time marked by conflicts, and our task will be to convince all 27 EU member states that Europe can continue to be the safest, most stable place on Earth. Security will be our top priority during the upcoming six months.
We will implement a shared, carefully planned security policy, providing Ukraine with the necessary support. This can only be achieved together. Our fundamental goals are tied to the security of our citizens, nations, and the European Union as a whole. This is the kind of security that starts at home for every European and extends to the EU’s external borders. We must work to strengthen the Union’s borders and counter the instrumentalisation of migration. Solidarity is essential. We understand that shared security is not only about enhancing Europe’s defensive capabilities but also about ensuring competitiveness, energy independence, and food security.
Together, we are building a unified foundation for economic security – Europe’s competitiveness in the global race for innovation and technological development. We aim to remain competitive, which is why we will work to reduce barriers for industry and entrepreneurs. The European Union is not just the policy of 27 nations but, above all, a single market and trade network. These relationships build our community, just as our core European values do: democracy, the rule of law, progress, and cooperation.
We will do everything to ensure that Europe’s security is a reality, not just an aspiration. I hope Poland will lead efforts that result in peace. Let us wish ourselves success in this endeavour.
Donald Tusk
