Access City Award
Applications open for the 2026 Access City Award
Cities are now invited to apply for the 2026 Access City Award, which recognizes cities that have done outstanding work to become more accessible for persons with disabilities.
The award is organized by the Commission in partnership with the European Disability Forum. It is open to cities across the EU with over 50,000 inhabitants. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners of the 2026 Access City Award will receive prizes of €150,000, €120,000, and €80,000, respectively. These prizes reward successful participants for their work done and serve to further support their improvements on accessibility.
As part of its wider efforts to tackle housing-related challenges, the Commission intends to award a Special Mention for ‘Accessibility in Housing' in the 2026 edition. This award will be given to a city that ensures accessibility for persons with disabilities and older people when working towards equal access and towards affordable and quality living conditions for their citizens.
Other Special Mentions may be granted to applicants who demonstrate exceptional work in a specific area - such as the built environment and public space; mobility, transport, and related infrastructure; information and communication, including ICT; or public facilities and services.
Preparedness and Equality Commissioner Hadja Lahbib (pictured) said: “Accessibility is a right, not a privilege; it enables persons with disabilities to participate fully in society. Cities are vibrant hubs of cultural, economic, and social activity. They play a key role in shaping the everyday lives of their residents as well as visitors. This is why cities can lead the way in building inclusive societies.”
The winners will be announced at the award ceremony, which will take place at the European Day of Persons with Disabilities conference in Brussels on 4-5 December 2025. Cities can submit their applications until 9 September 2025 at 23:59 CEST.
