On World Humanitarian Day (19 August) High Representative/Vice President Josep Borrell (pictured) and Crisis Management Commissioner Janez Lenarčič said: “Ahead of World Humanitarian Day 2021 , we honour all aid workers who save lives and help the most vulnerable in global crises. The commitment and unwavering efforts of humanitarian and medical personnel, who strive every day, often under difficult conditions, to alleviate the suffering of millions of people in need, has been all the more remarkable from the beginning. of the coronavirus pandemic.

"The virus is not the worst threat they face, however. Sadly, in 2020, 108 aid workers lost their lives and 125 were kidnapped. In 2021, 105 major attacks have been carried out against aid workers to date. We condemn these attacks and their perpetrators must answer for their actions. Saving lives should never cost lives; aid workers cannot be a target. We salute their courage and dedication and extend our sympathy to the families, friends and colleagues of those who have lost their lives while helping others."
