European Capital of Innovation Prize: Launch of the 2022 edition
The Commission has launched the eighth edition of the European Capital of Innovation (iCapital) awards. The awards, supported by the European Innovation Council (EIC) under the Horizon Europe programme, recognize the role cities play in shaping the local innovation ecosystem and promoting transformational innovation. The competition will award six prizes worth a total of €1.8 million in two categories: 'European Capital of Innovation' and 'Most Innovative City'.
Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Commissioner Mariya Gabriel said: “Cities are drivers of change across Europe. Through their ability to bring together players in the local innovation ecosystem, they can accelerate the growth of start-ups and innovators and, at the same time, bring about systemic transformation in order to achieve the goal of climate neutrality."
The European Capital of Innovation 2022 awards are now open for applications and are looking for the most innovative European cities that share this vision. The competition is open to cities with at least 50,000 inhabitants from EU member states and countries associated with Horizon Europe.
The prize was first awarded in 2014. Previous winners include Barcelona (2014), Amsterdam (2016), Paris (2017), Athens (2018), Nantes (2019), Leuven (2020) and Dortmund ( 2021) as European Capitals of Innovation.
In 2021, Vantaa in Finland was awarded the title of Rising Innovative city thanks to a new category introduced to reward innovative practices implemented by small cities with more than 50,000 and up to 249,999 inhabitants.
