Europe mourns Jacques Delors

President von der Leyen today paid tribute to Jacques Delors, described as the architect of the modern EU, who has died aged 98.
"We are all heirs to the life work of Jacques Delors: a dynamic and prosperous European Union. Jacques Delors forged his vision of a united Europe and his commitment to peace during the dark hours of the Second World War," said President von der Leyen.
"Of remarkable intelligence and incomparable humanity, throughout his life he was a tireless defender of cooperation between European nations, then of the development of European identity.
An idea to which he brought to life thanks, among other things, to the establishment of the single market, the Erasmus program and the beginnings of a single currency, thus shaping a prosperous and influential European bloc.
His presidency of the European Commission was characterized by a deep commitment to freedom, social justice and solidarity - values now embedded in our Union.
Jacques Delors was a visionary who made Europe stronger. His work has had a profound impact on the lives of generations of Europeans, including mine. We are infinitely grateful to him.
Let us honour his legacy by constantly renewing and revitalizing our Europe."
