Audit report on the EU’s support for tourism – publication today
Today (14 December), the European Court of Auditors (ECA) will publish a special report on the EU’s support for tourism. The EU has a complementary role in tourism policy, supporting and co-ordinating the actions taken by the member states. There was no dedicated EU budget for tourism in the 2014-2020 period. The European Commission defined the EU’s current tourism strategy in 2010, and can financially support tourism through multiple EU programmes. This continues to be the case for the 2021-2027 period.
The EU auditors have analysed whether the Commission’s actions aimed at supporting the EU’s tourism industry during the 2014-2020 period were effective. They have examined a sample of public tourism projects funded under the European Regional Development Fund in four member states (Hungary, Poland, Romania and Spain). The auditors have also identified the key measures proposed by the Commission to respond to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the European tourism sector. Finally, they covered the Commission’s actions related to the design of the EU’s financial support to tourism for the 2021-2027 period.
The report and press release will be published on the ECA website at 17h CET today. The ECA member responsible for this report is Pietro Russo.
