With the first meeting on 24 October 2025, DG DEFIS officially launched subgroup 3 of the STM stakeholder mechanism.

This subgroup, chaired by DG DEFIS, gathers representatives from EU Member StatesEU space industry associationsexperts in the field of standardisation and voluntary initiatives, and European space law experts. STM subgroup 3 will help implement the third avenue on “fostering the STM regulatory aspects” of the Joint Communication on an EU approach to STM, with a focus on non-binding measures.

In their first meeting, STM subgroup 3 members heard about the wider context of EU Space Traffic Management and its related implemented activities. This included amongst other things details on the feasibility study on an EU Space Label,   conclusions from the STM voluntary measures workshop held last month which they were invited to follow online and insights into the subgroup’s working methods. In the following exchange of views, STM subgroup 3 members started reflecting on non-binding measures to be developed and/or promoted, effective ways to ensure uptake of such measures, and aspects to consider for a future EU Space Label.
