#Moria: EU asylum officers will resume activities when their security is guaranteed  #EUMigration

161024moriapetrolbomb2Yesterday (24 October), the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) experienced a serious security incident in Moria, Lesvos, where a number of EASO containers and other logistical equipment were destroyed in a petrol bomb attack.

EASO staff were evacuated and all migrants and staff are safe and accounted for. Officials are now assessing the situation and the extent of the damage. A number of mobile offices have been damaged or destroyed. Due to the fire, EASO expects that certain documents could have also been damaged or destroyed.

The Greek authorities will monitor the situation and ensure a secure working environment that will allow us to resume operations. In this context, the EASO Executive Director, yesterday, held a meeting with Greek Minister Mouzalas where he expressed his concern with the security situation.

Operations in Moria will be resumed as soon as possible and activities in the other hotspots will continue as usual.

EASO will make sure that all the necessary guarantees are in place before restarting of operations, in a secure environment, as soon as possible. The safety and security of its experts, interpreters and staff is a top priority.

While the safety and security in the Greek Hotspots is the responsibility of the Hellenic Authorities. EASO has undertaken several measures to strengthen the safety and security of the working environment. In particularly, emergency exits have been installed and security guards have been employed to ensure staff safety.
