MEPs started this week’s plenary session with a debate on the anti-racism protests following the death of George Floyd. His death, along with other such cases, has sparked demonstrations and protests against racism and police brutality all over the US, as well as around the globe. Though black people are poorly represented in the parliament, the debate included three black women who shared some of their experience. Pierrette Herzberger-Fofana MEP (DE, Green) said that there was systemic racism, she said that it wasn’t just a question of police training, there had to be consequences. She said those black people who are dying in the Mediterranean are also ‘black lives that matter.’ Monica Semedo MEP (LU, Renew) said that colour is not just invisible and that she has experienced discrimination in airports and been surrounded by neo-nazis. She said the Council must unblock the anti-discrimination directive. Samira Rafaela MEP (NL, Renew) said she stood with anyone who is standing against discrimination, systemic injustices and institutional racism. She said people were demanding action and wondered if her ancestors would see society now, would they see real equality?
