'Very good progress' reported on nuclear deal with Islamic republic

downloadThe European Union reported "very good progress" after two-day talks in Geneva on the implementation of a nuclear deal between the six world powers and the Islamic republic over its nuclear programme.

"The EU's External Action Service Deputy Secretary General Helga Schmid and Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi made very good progress on all the pertinent issues," Michael Mann, spokesperson for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said. Ashton is negotiating on behalf of the world powers and Schmid is her deputy.

The EU and Iranian officials met on Thursday and Friday to iron out remaining practical issues remaining since the November 24 deal, under which Iran agreed to curb its atomic work in return for some relief from western economic sanctions. Mann said that any agreements had to be validated by the governments of Iran and the six world powers: the United States, Russia, China, France, Great Britain and Germany. While Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister was quoted as telling Iranian state media that ‘’all outstanding issues had been resolved,’’ the US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said ‘’there have been a few outstanding issues but at this point the reports that everything has been finalized are incorrect.’’
