Schulz on ratification of Association Agreement between the European Union and Republic of Moldova
"I warmly welcome today's (13 November) adoption of the Association Agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova by the European Parliament and would like to congratulate the people of Moldova for this remarkable achievement.
"In my meeting today with Igor Corman, Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, I stressed that the agreement represents not only a key achievement in the deepening of EU-Moldova relations but also a commitment to the path of political association and economic integration. The European Parliament recognizes the reform efforts and ambitions of the Moldovan people and authorities and the substantial progress achieved.
"During the past four years, the pro-European Alliance in Moldova has intensified these efforts significantly, allowed Moldova to become the first Eastern Partnership country to achieve a visa-free regime, and placed Moldova at the forefront of the region in terms of the European reform agenda.
"I fully support Moldova’s goals to improve its democratic structures and good governance. Strengthening Moldova's political institutions, judiciary system and socio-political culture is of paramount importance in order to reinforce the country's resilience towards external pressure and threats. In these challenging times for the region, we stand by Moldova and reject the trade restrictions coming from Russia and the attempts to restrict the free will and choice of the Moldovan people.
"Now it is up to the government of Moldova to finalise the implementation of the reform agenda in order to unlock the full benefits of the new agreement.
"I expect that the upcoming legislative elections on 30 November 2014 will be free and fair and in line with the highest European and international standards. The European Parliament will mark its commitment and support of Moldova's democratic process by sending seven MEPs to participate in the OSCE/ODIHR led international election observation mission. After the elections it is tremendously important to continue to further strengthen the rule of law and the fight against corruption and to renew the stalled talks on the resolution of the Transnistria conflict."
