MSF114000-south-sudanEU High Representative/Vice President Federica Mogherini, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Commissioner Christos Stylianides and International Cooperation and Development Commissioner Neven Mimica issued the following statement on steps towards a peace agreement for South Sudan.

"Yesterday a partial agreement was signed in Addis Ababa marking a step closer in achieving a final peace agreement for South Sudan.  The government of the Republic of South Sudan decided not to sign but initialled the agreement. We look forward to the government of South Sudan moving forward to sign a final agreement.

"At this stage, the EU welcomes the signature by the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition (SPLM/A iO) and the former political detainees. Persistent efforts by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) were vital to get this far.

"The EU continues to support IGAD's commitment and all other parties involved to achieve an immediate and full implementation of the ceasefire and unhindered access to the population of South Sudan who continue to suffer from a severe humanitarian crisis. Failing to comply would entail consequences."
