NATOThe European Parliament adopted today in plenary ALDE MEP Urmas Paet’s report on European Defence Union, representing a first step towards a more systematic military cooperation between EU member states. The rapporteur made a series of recommendations in order to tackle security challenges in and around Europe.

Urmas Paet (Estonian Reform Party) said the European Defence Union should be made in full complementarity with NATO: “European security has grown increasingly fragile. The surge of instability and unpredictability around the Union's boarders is a reality and a reason of extreme concern to all European citizens. In order to defend itself and improve its security capabilities, the European Union must do more.”

“My main recommendations include the goal for EU countries to spend 2% of their GDP on defence, supporting NATO, developing European defence industry, re-designing EU battle-groups and establishing a military Schengen. The role of NATO has been, is and will continue to be paramount and advancing the European Defence policy should be made in full complementarity with NATO.”
