#NATO calls for Russia to take a responsible approach to military exercises
Speaking after today’s (20 December) NATO-Russia Council, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg (pictured) said that dialogue was important but that profound disagreements remain, writes Catherine Feore.
Ukraine
NATO allies stressed their strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, saying: “Allies do not, and will not, recognize Russia’s illegal and illegitimate annexation of Crimea.” Stoltenberg said that the situation in eastern Ukraine also remains of deep concern with violations of the ceasefire at record levels, a failure to withdraw heavy weapons and the targeting of OSCE monitors. He reiterated the need for all signatories of the Minsk Agreements to fully comply with their commitments.
Stoltenberg also pressed that Russia should use its considerable influence on the militants to meet their commitments in full.
Risk reduction
Allies raised concern over the excessive use of snap exercises by Russia saying that they are destabilizing, and “do not improve the overall climate of our relations”. Transparency in military exercises in general is essential for stability. Allies said that behaving responsibly and predictably reduces the risk of misunderstanding, miscalculation, and unintended escalation.
