Bulgaria destroys mine drifting near its Black Sea coast
The defense ministry announced that the navy of Bulgaria conducted a controlled explosion to remove a floating naval mine close to the country’s Black Sea coast.
After Russia invaded Ukraine, on 24 February 2022, mines started floating in the Black Sea. Special diving teams from Turkey, Bulgaria, and Romania have defused mines that were floating in their waters.
According to the ministry, the navy was alerted by the ministry about a floating object 200m (220 yards) offshore the Black Sea coast, near Tulenovo in northeastern Bulgaria.
According to the ministry, the mine was an "anchored" YaM type and was placed in a combat area. It was destroyed later that day by a special dive team.
Around 40 mines have been destroyed in the Black Sea's western waters by Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine since the start of the war.
