Cyprus Presidency includes focus on effective migration management and ProtectEU
Cyprus holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU from 1 January to 30 June 2026. Under the slogan “An Autonomous Union. Open to the World,” the Presidency focuses on 5 overarching priorities:
- Autonomy through Security, Defence Readiness and Preparedness
- Autonomy through Competitiveness
- Open to the World, Autonomous
- An Autonomous Union of Values that Leaves No One Behind
- A long-term budget for an autonomous Union
Migration and Home Affairs Priorities
During its Presidency, Cyprus will focus on effective migration management of both - its internal and external dimensions.
The Cyprus Presidency will prioritise the full implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum and will promote a strengthened return system and cooperation with key non-EU countries to ensure a balanced and comprehensive approach.
The Presidency will also focus on combatting internal threats, such as organised and transnational crime, terrorism, and violent extremism, including challenges in the digital sphere. Swift and decisive action is needed, in line with the ProtectEU Strategy, to strengthen law enforcement capabilities, enhance transnational cooperation and improve the regulatory framework.
