Rusting Eiffel Tower in need of full repairs, reports say
The Eiffel Tower is rusted and in dire need of complete repairs. Instead, it will be given a cosmetic €60 million paint job in preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games, according to Marianne, a confidential report.
Gustave Eiffel built the tower of wrought iron 324 metres (1,063 feet) high in late 19th-century France. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and receives approximately six million people each year.
Marianne cites confidential reports from experts that the monument is in poor condition and rusty.
Marianne was told by an unnamed manager of the tower that "it is simple, Gustave Eiffel would have a heart attack".
Societe d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel, the company responsible for overseeing the tower, could not immediately be reached for comment.
In preparation for the 2024 Olympics, the tower is currently being repainted at a cost of 60 million euros. This marks the 20th time that the Tower has been repainted.
Marianne stated that 30% of the tower had been supposed to be stripped and two coats of paint applied. However, delays due to the COVID pandemic as well as the presence of lead in the older paint mean only 5% of the tower will be treated.
SETE is reluctantly closing the tower for long periods of time due to the loss in tourist revenue, it said.
