Patients with COVID-19 receive medical treatment in an annex that was previously used for cleaning and disinfecting. It is now joined to the ER unit of Giurgiu County Emergency Hospital in Giurgiu, Romania, 4 November, 2021.

Romania's new COVID-19 cases nearly doubled in the past week. A peak of 10,000 cases per day is expected by mid-August, according to Health Minister Alexandru Rafila.

Romania is the European Union's 2nd-least vaccinated country, with less than 42% of its population being fully inoculated. This is due to distrust of state institutions as well as poor vaccine education.

Data showed that 8,000 new infections were reported in the past week, up from 3,974 cases the week before. However, the number of deaths and hospitalisations remained low.

Rafila stated that Romania could report daily cases instead of weekly numbers if the infection rate continues to rise. In March, the country lifted all pandemic restrictions.

Romania was at the peak of the pandemic, in late 2021. It topped the global coronavirus deaths per thousand lists. In the country of 20 millions, 65,755 people have been killed by the pandemic.
