A coalition of hundreds of emergency personnel and French airborne firefighters brought a wildfire close to the Mediterranean coast under control Friday. However, it will take several days to put out, local authorities stated.

More than 1,000 firefighters responded to the Gard fire, which had destroyed more than 600 hectares (1.480 acres) and required the evacuation of some residents.

"The situation is improving. The fire is under control. "We must remain vigilant," Marie-Francoise Lecaillon, Gard prefect, told BFM television Friday evening.

She said that 18 firefighters were hurt while fighting the fire, but there were no casualties in the general population.

A spokesperson for the fire brigade said that it would take several days to put out the flames.

Public access to Gard forests was restricted until Monday.

The fire's location is located just over 100 km (60 miles) away from the Mediterranean coast. There is a forecast of strong winds, high temperatures and tinder-box conditions in the next few days.
