Dozens feared missing after migrant boat sinks off Greek island
Authorities in Greece said that the coast guard was looking for dozens of migrants who were missing when their boat sank off Evia Island during bad weather on Tuesday (1 November).
Nikos Kokkalas, a spokesperson for the Greek coast guard, said that ten men were rescued from the boat which sank near the southern tip Evia. The boat had been sailing from Turkey. According to survivors, the boat had 68 passengers.
Under gale-force winds, the rescue operation involves a coast guard vessel, a helicopter, and two nearby boats.
This was the second incident this week involving a boat carrying migrants. After their inflatable dinghy flipped, four migrants were saved near Samos in the eastern Aegean, Turkey.
In 2015, Greece was at the forefront of an European migration crisis. Nearly a million refugees fleeing poverty and war in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan arrived in Greece on boats from Turkey.
Since 2016, when the European Union and Turkey signed a deal to end the flow of migrants, the number has declined. However, Greek authorities claim that they have seen an increase in attempts to enter Greece through its islands and land border with Turkey.
Ioannis Plakiotakis (Greek shipping minister) said on Tuesday that Turkey was "still allowing rings ruthless traffickers send our fellow humans to their deaths".
