Italy's centre-left Democratic Party concedes election defeat

Italy's main centre left group, the Democratic Party, conceded defeat Monday morning (26 September) in a national election. It said that it would be the largest opposition party in the next parliament.

Debora Serracchiani (a senior PD lawmaker) said to reporters that it was a "sad evening for the country" in her first official comment about the outcome. "(The right), has the majority in parliament but not in the country."

Provisional results indicated that the right-wing alliance of Giorgia Meloni and his Brothers of Italy party won 43% of votes. This was enough to secure a clear majority of parliament.
