Romanian prosecutors investigate fuel theft at NATO military base
Romanian military prosecutors have announced that they are investigating seven soldiers as well as a civilian in relation to fuel theft from a NATO military base in the eastern region of Constanta.
The eight suspects have been taken into custody by the prosecution, who are now asking for temporary warrants of arrest for 28 days.
Prosecutors stated in a statement that the soldiers were part of the Mihail Kgalniceanu airbase and had repeatedly stolen kerosene, diesel over 2022 to use for personal interests or sell.
It was not possible to reach the suspects immediately for comment.
This is the second criminal investigation of fuel theft at Kogalniceanu, an air base at the Black Sea that US forces use since 1999.
After receiving a complaint by the US government in late 2021, Romanian prosecutors arrested an organized crime group which stole approximately $2 million of diesel and other fuel from the base over five years.
The European Union and NATO member Romania hosts a US-based ballistic missile defense system. As of this year, a permanent alliance battle force was led by French troops stationed in its territory in central Romania.
At the moment, there are fewer than 4,600 NATO troops in Romania.
