Russian President Vladimir Putin is concerned about the "sparks of democracy" spreading across his country, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (pictured) stated. He also said that he was trying to divide Europe and bring back spheres dominance.

Scholz was answering a question from the Muenchner Merkur newspaper on Monday (20 June) about whether Putin would allow Ukraine to move closer to the European Union.

He stated that the Russian president should accept that there are law-based democracies growing closer to him. He clearly fears that democracy will spread to his country.

Last week, the European Commission recommended that Ukraine, which is fighting a Russian invasion of its East, be granted the status as a candidate to the European Union. Scholz also supported this move.

"(Putin), wants a divided Europe, and a return of a politics of influence Scholz stated. He won't succeed at this."

Scholz warned of the fact that rising energy prices will likely continue for a while and dismissed Russia's claim that it had reduced gas flow because needed spare parts were missing from sanctions.

He said: "This explanation cannot be believed."
