Zelenskiy works the phone to rally support against Russia, thanks allies
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zeleskiy (pictured) called a few foreign leaders on Wednesday (28 September) as Moscow appeared ready to annexe a large area of Ukrainian territory. Later, he thanked them for their support.
Zelenskiy met with leaders from Britain, Canada and Germany to demand more military assistance and tougher sanctions against Moscow following what Kyiv, Canada and the West condemned as illegal sham elections in four provinces on Ukraine.
"Thanks to all of you for your unambiguous and clear support. Zelenskiy expressed his gratitude for your understanding of our position in a late-night video address.
"Russia cannot and will not allow Ukraine to seize any portion of our country."
The United States stated that it was working with allies to impose severe economic consequences on Moscow. However, the executive of the European Union proposed new sanctions.
Zelenskiy, after speaking with Liz Truss (British Prime Minister), tweeted that the "defence" and "financial aid to Ukraine should be increased in response."
Zelenskiy also won Olaf Scholz's promise that Berlin would continue to support Ukraine's political, financial and humanitarian needs.
A spokesperson for the German government said that Scholz also stated that Germany will continue to support Ukraine in its defense of sovereignty and territorial integrity, including arms deliveries.
