A referendum in Slovakia did not open a pathway to early elections. Most voters voted on Saturday (21 January) and thereby quashed the opposition's plans to move the contest forward.

According to the Statistics Office, only 27.3% of voters cast their ballots, which is far less than the absolute majority required for a referendum to be valid.

Since 1993, when Slovakia gained independence, only one popular vote has been cast for the European Union.

If the constitution is amended to allow parliament to serve a shorter term of four years, a Slovakian election could be held before normal elections. A referendum would be required to approve a constitutional change.

After losing a no confidence vote in December, the government of Prime Minister Eduard Heger was forced to act as a caretaker.

On Sunday night, political parties will hold another round in talks. They will discuss the possibility of holding early elections that could be held before the summer or autumn. The regular election will take place in February 2024.

Zuzana Caputova, President of the Republic, stated earlier this week that she would take over Heger's government in the event the parties fail to reach an agreement by 31 January.
