The sound of "run, ran, run...run" echoed across the hillside. A wall of flame, fed by high winds, swept towards four Spanish firefighters and engulfed tinder-dry bracken just seconds after they fled for their lives.

Crews attempted to stop flames reaching a village in Bejis, north Valencia, when they encountered the wildfire.

Local emergency services reported that three firefighters were hurt by the flames, and that several villages were evacuated.

On Tuesday (16 August), at least 10 people were injured in the same fire.

The driver was able to safely reverse the train that was bound for Zaragoza and bring it back to Valencia station.

According to a Nature Geoscience journal study, climate change has made parts of the Iberian peninsula their driest for over 1,200 years.

Portugal's neighbour, Portugal, saw more than 1,200 firefighters fighting a wildfire in the Serra da Estrela national Park. The fire has burned more than 17,000 ha since its beginning on 6 August.

Tuesday saw smoke from the fire surround skyscrapers in Madrid. This was more than 400 km (250 miles) away.

Wildfires have already blazed more than 275,000 hectares of Spain's territory so far this year. Portugal has 87,000, and the latter represents around 1% Portugal's territory, the highest in the European Union.
