Spanish novelist Javier Marias dies aged 70
Javier Marias (pictured), a Spanish novelist, has died at 70 years old, according to his publisher Alfaguara.
Marias, who was suffering from pneumonia for the past month, published 16 novels, including Your Face Tomorrow, a trilogy that was released between 2002-2007.
Eduardo Mendoza, a Spanish novelist, wrote that Javier Marias was "the best writer in Spain". This tribute was written for Spain's daily newspaper El Pais.
"A sad day for Spanish letters," Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez tweeted. "Javier Marias, one of the greatest writers of our times, has passed away,"
Alfaguara's website states that his books were translated in 46 languages and sold nearly 9 million copies in 56 countries.
Marias was a translator and columnist for El Pais. He has received numerous awards for his work. He was elected as an International Writer to the Royal Society of Literature in Britain last year.
