Ukraine's Zelenskiy: Delay on Russia oil embargo decision is costing lives
The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called on Western politicians on Thursday to agree quickly on an embargo on Russian oil. He complained that the failure to do so is costing Ukrainians their lives.
Zelenskiy, in a video address to the cameras at dawn, stated that he will continue to demand that Russian banks are completely excluded from the international financial system.
Over 4 million people fled Ukraine after Russia invaded Ukraine six weeks ago. Thousands were killed and injured, and many cities and towns were destroyed.
Zelenskiy stated that Moscow was making so much money off oil exports it didn't need to be serious about peace negotiations and asked the "democratic universe" to avoid Russian crude.
Zelenskiy stated that "some politicians are still incapable of deciding how to limit oil euros and petrodollars to Russia so that their own economies do not put at risk", but predicted that an oil embargo would nonetheless be in place.
He said, "The only question is how much more Ukrainian men and women, the Russian military can kill to allow you, certain politicians – and we know who you are - to find some determination."
Russia claims it is involved in a "special army operation" to "denazify and demilitarize Ukraine. The West and Ukraine reject this as a pretext for their invasion.
On Wednesday, the United States targeted Russian elites and banks with a new round sanctions. Zelenskiy stated that the announcement was not sufficient.
