Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (pictured) surprised Kharkiv on Tuesday (10 January). She promised more weapons and "concrete proposals" for Ukraine's accession.

Baerbock, in a statement made ahead of meeting with Dmytro Kuleba the foreign minister, expressed Germany's solidarity with Ukrainians who are living under harsh winter conditions and Russia's invasion.

She said: "This city is a symbol for the absolute insanity in Russia's aggression in Ukraine, and the inexorable suffering that people, especially in the east, are subject to every day."

Baerbock, despite not naming the weapons, promised that Germany would send Marder fighting vehicles into Ukraine, as part of its stepped-up military support.

She said that it was crucial to not lose sight of Ukraine's European place and its desire for membership.

She said: "That's why I would also love to talk about the progress made during the accession process.

"We, the government, want to make very specific offers to Ukraine in an effort to make progress in strengthening law, independence institutions, and fighting corruption as well as aligning with EU standards."
