On behalf of the government and people of Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) welcomed the European Parliament’s (EP) adoption, 7 July, of a resolution urging the European Commission to move forward on an investment agreement with Taiwan.

Authored by Belgian MEP Kathleen Van Brempt, the resolution entitled 'Trade-related aspects and implications of COVID-19', urges the Commission to make the move towards an investment agreement with Taiwan by taking the necessary steps to begin an impact assessment, public consultations and a scoping exercise before the end of 2021. The report also calls on the Commission to start a dialogue on semiconductors with Taiwan.

According to MOFA, the resolution is the fifth such expression of support from the European Parliament during its current session for an investment agreement with Taiwan. This repeated backing is indicative of the deep-seated support among MEPs for the advancement of the bilateral trade and investment relationship, the ministry added.

Likewise, the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium joined MOFA in signalling its deep appreciation for the staunch support from the EP and pledged to continue to work on deepening trade and investment cooperation between the EU and Taiwan.

TRO appreciates dual EP resolutions supporting Taiwan’s security and democracy.
