High-level conference to discuss the future of animal welfare

The Commission has hosted a high-level conference on the EU's animal welfare policy (9 December). The event was opened by Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakides, and by the Slovenian Agriculture, Forestry and Food Minister Jože Podgoršek. Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski also addressed the participants. The keynote speech was delivered by the world-renowned ethologist and conservationist, DrJane Goodall.

The aim of the event was to debate the Commission's ongoing work to revise the EU's legislation on animal welfare in 2023. Five panels discussed animal welfare labelling; phasing-out of cages as a follow-up to a European Citizens Initiative; animal transport; animal welfare at farm level and at the time of slaughter. The panel exchanges and conclusions will feed into the Commission's work on upcoming proposals. The public consultation on the revision of the legislation is open for views until 21 January 2022.
