On behalf of President Ma Ying-jeou, Wu presented Pope Francis with a portrait of the current pontiff painted by Taiwanese artist Liang Dan-feng. Wu’s visit marks Taiwan's second official delegation to the Holy See since President Ma took office in 2008. Ma visited the Vatican last year to attend the installation of Pope Francis, an event that highlighted the 73-year-long friendship between the two states, according to Vice Foreign Minister Vanessa Shih.

Wu also met with Taiwan priests posted in the Vatican, Taiwan expatriates currently living there, and foreign priests who have previously worked in Taiwan. He will return home on 30 April.
