Pro-Kremlin channel Russia Today says France operation closing
The French arm of the Russian state-owned RT TV network announced on Saturday (21 January) that it would be shutting down following European Union sanctions.
The European Union declared that it would banning Russia Today in February 2012, just after Russia invaded Ukraine. This was on the grounds that Russia Today had spread disinformation about war. France appealed against the ban, but RT (Russia Today).
RT France's head Xenia Fedorova tweeted that French authorities had cited a 9th EU package with sanctions, which was agreed last December.
She stated that the funds of RT France were frozen at the request by the Treasury general directorate... the channel cannot continue its activities."
The Court of Justice of the European Union rejected a RT France bid to grant a temporary reprieve.
RT France also stated that 133 jobs were at risk. It called itself "a breath-of-fresh air" for its balanced coverage of the war.
It accused French authorities of censorship, and stated that RT France was never condemned or sanctioned.
