The European Commission has approved the addition of ‘Muránske buchty' to the register of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI).

‘Muránske buchty' are sweet filled rolls made from dough prepared entirely by hand, layered several times with margarine to create a dense, smooth texture and a flaky interior. The filling may be plum, curd, poppyseed, nut, strawberry, bilberry or sour cherry, apple and cinnamon, or chocolate and hazelnut. After baking, the rolls are sprinkled with icing sugar.

The product is made exclusively in the municipality of Muráň, in central Slovakia's Banská Bystrica Region. Its qualities are the result of the area's long-standing tradition of preparing the dough entirely by hand, with repeated folding, layering, and rising. This know-how, handed down through generations since at least the 1960s, gives ‘Muránske buchty' their distinctive structure, appearance and taste, and has earned them a strong local reputation, celebrated at fairs and food festivals across Slovakia.

This new designation joins the more than 3,674 protected names already listed in the eAmbrosia database. For more information, see the Quality Policy pages.
