EU-Taiwan relations: President hoping for progress in economic ties
During the visit of a delegation from the Senate of the Czech Republic on 20 December, President Ma Ying-jeou (pictured) expressed the hope that Taiwan and the EU can soon achieve a breakthrough in economic co-operation. Member states have already invested more than US$32 billion in Taiwan, making the EU the largest foreign investor in Taiwan, Ma said.
He proposed that the two sides sign a bilateral investment agreement to provide better protection for investors and to promote investment relations.
The president also expressed his hope that the working holiday agreement currently being negotiated between Taiwan and the Czech Republic can be finalized as soon as possible, so as to deepen and broaden exchanges between young people of both countries. Ma concluded by expressing his appreciation to the Czech Republic for its support to Taiwan’s bid to participate in international organizations.
