Changing of the guard
The European Parliament elections in May 2014 are hotting up to be the most keenly anticipated test of European public opinion since the first direct elections in 1979. These are the first Europe wide elections since the start of the euro crisis, where Europe is seen by many as part of the problem rather than the solution. The temptation for many voters to punish all mainstream parties, and not just those who are governing, could see a marked rise in extremes of both left and right, leading to a more unruly, ill-disciplined and confrontational parliament. Majorities could become harder to achieve for major legislative dossiers or key institutional decisions, such as the election of the President of the European Commission.
The elections also mark the first step in the changing of the guard, a year-long game of musical chairs where new leaders must be found for Parliament, Commission and European Council. For the first time, European political parties will name their candidate to replace José Manuel Barroso, with the hope that giving personality to the elections will rouse voter interest.
EU Reporter will be keeping you up to date on all the developments in the build-up to the elections- who is standing, who is in the running for the top jobs and who we will be saying good-bye to. Our regular updates plan to keep you informed of the key decisions that will shape the course of the EU over the next five years.
