Today (15 January) MEPs meeting in Strasbourg discussed the priorities of the incoming Romanian Presidency of the European Council. This is the first time that Romania – which joined the EU in 2007 – will hold the Presidency. We asked Finance Minister Eugen Teodorovici about the next six months of what will be an unusual presidency, with imminent European elections, Brexit and the end of the current Commission mandate approaching its end.

Teodor0vici acknowledges that the Presidency really only had two months to discuss and debate as many files as possible, but with the dissolution of the European Parliament there was much to discuss. He said within his role as finance minister there would be discussions on the next financial framework between 2021 – 2027.

On Brexit, he said that the EU would have to wait to see the outcome of today’s vote in the House of Commons. When we asked about Romania’s prospect of joining the Schengen Area, Teodorovici said that Romania fulfils the requirements and that it is part of Jean-Claude Juncker’s mandate that Romania will accede to Schengen and he expected it to happen during the Presidency.

The European Parliament also held a short event to celebrate 20 years of the euro. Teodorovici says that Romania is on track to join the euro in 2024. Romania is required by its EU accession agreement to replace the leu, with the euro, as soon as it meets euro convergence criteria.
