Member states must deliver on #climate action
“The member states should find a common position to strengthen the emission trading system," says S&D-Member of the European Parliament Jo Leinen prior to the Council meeting on 28th February. “The minister should agree to significantly reduce the surplus of certificates in the market. This is one of the European Parliament’s demands of the plenary vote two weeks ago.”
“The uptake rate of the market stability reserve should be doubled”, Jo Leinen demands. “The Council should also agree to deleting certificates or setting an expiry date to certificates to finally better align the supply of certificates with the demand”, says Jo Leinen. “To maintain the emission trading system as a central instrument for climate mitigation, conservative member states should dissolve their resistance. Climate action should not be sacrificed for the sake of individual interests of member states.”
“The Council has discussed all options at length. It is time for a common position to strengthen the emission trading system. For energy and industry installations it would be important to conclude this reform this year," says Jo Leinen.
