Energy Cities, the European Association of local authorities in energy transition, has joined forces with SolarPower Europe and 12 other associations, to support small-scale renewable and high efficiency co-generation installations in Europe, which are currently at risk under new EU legislation.
James Watson, CEO of SolarPower Europe said: "Small renewable installations on office buildings, schools, libraries and hospitals are crucial to a successful energy transition in cities. We are delighted that Energy Cities support this position and have joined the Small is Beautiful campaign, which aims to safeguard small installations across Europe.
"Energy Cities joins the campaign at a crucial moment as we approach the final negotiations of the Clean Energy Package, where we must ensure that small-scale renewables receive support from the EU to thrive. This will empower consumers and communities across Europe, bringing new clean local jobs and investments. This is fully in line with the EUs own climate and energy objectives" added Watson.
Professor Dr Eckart Würzner, Mayor of Heidelberg and President of Energy Cities commented "In the road to a fully renewable-powered system, Energy Cities' members have always called for "energy subsidiarity", where locally-available solutions and savings are explored first and large-scale options considered next. Studies have shown how local, community-owned energy systems contribute up to 8 times more to inward economic development than bigger installations, often sponsored by external developers. The Small is Beautiful Campaign has our full backing and we hope it will help enact this principle into EU legislation."
