Global warming accelerates. Therefore, the global community must speed up climate action, said member of the Environment Committee of the European Parliament, Jo Leinen (S&D) (pictured). “In international climate action, the European Union should set the pace and raise its climate target for 2030 ahead of the next UN climate summit (COP24) in Katowice," Leinen demanded. Taking into account the recent compromises on strengthening renewable energies and energy efficiency in Europe, the logical consequence now is to increase the CO2 reduction target from currently 40% to 45% by 2030, Leinen added.

Until 2020, all states shall review and scale up their climate targets submitted in 2015 under the Paris Agreement. A higher EU target would encourage other members of the UN climate convention to take further action to reduce CO2.
