European Parliament shake-up continues
New reform measures to increase transparency of MEP activities continue as the Parliament’s ethics committee is chaired by its first and only British MEP.
Dr Sajjad Karim MEP took over the helm of the Advisory Committee on the Code of Conduct for MEPs ahead of the European elections in May 2014. The newly appointed chairman, who is currently the Conservative Legal Affairs spokesperson, promised greater reforms to clamp down on corrupt practices.
MEPs in Brussels are now bound by a Code of Conduct which was introduced in 2012 after the ‘cash for amendments’ scandal exposed the lax rules set in place. The Code of Conduct prohibits receiving expensive gifts and forces MEPs to declare any extra payments they receive.
After the Advisory Committee meeting, Dr Karim said: “Trust is something that we as politicians need to earn. In my ten years as an MEP, the level of public engagement and confidence in EU politicians has dropped significantly.
“However, as Chair of the Advisory Committee, we are taking drastic steps to reverse the decline and win back the trust of citizens who have been dismayed by some scandals from a minority of MEPs.”
The European elections take place across the EU from 22-25 May 2014 and new MEPs are to be informed of their obligations in the Code of Conduct as part of their induction process.
