imagesFollowing the meeting in Athens between Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the Socialists and Democrats Group President  in the European Parliament,  Pittella said: "These are crucial hours for the negotiation. We must do everything we can to reach an equitable deal between Greece and the creditors. We have asked Tsipras to submit more details on the proposed reform program, and he has committed to do so.

"As for the European institutions, they have until now demonstrated a willingness to approach the matter in an open and constructive manner. It is now up to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to do the same: in demanding that reforms are implemented; it cannot ignore the dramatic social situation that the Greek people are facing. If the radical stance of those that evoke a possible exit of Greece from the Eurozone were to prevail, it wouldn’t simply be Greece’s future that would be jeopardized but that of the entire Eurozone. Greece must remain in the monetary union."
