Literacy, women’s rights and free movement in the EU were the most liked topics on the Parliament’s Facebook page this year between January and June with Sakharov Prize laureates Malala Yousafzai and Hauwa Ibrahim's messages on equal access to education and women’s rights proving to be the most popular.

Ibrahim created a video message on girls’ access to education on International Women’s Day on 8 March. “If we invest in girls, we invest in humanity,” she said. More than 100,000 people clicked "like" on the post, making it the single most successful post on Parliament’s Facebook page since it was launched.

The second most popular post this year dealt with the same topic: “Weapons or literacy? What should we invest in? See what Malala has to say and share if you agree.” More than 30,000 people liked, shared or commented on the post. The text was posted just before International Women’s Day and featured Sakharov laureate Yousafzai, the Pakistani activist fighting for female education, taking about how gender equality starts with education.

The Schengen agreement that enables border-free travel celebrated its 30th anniversary in June and our post on it was liked by nearly 30,000 Facebook fans. Europeans make more than 1.25 billion cross-border trips within the Schengen area every year.
